Scammers Are Exploiting Crypto ATMs

Scammers are exploiting crypto ATMs to siphon off millions of dollars in the US, as revealed in a recent report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and the Miami Herald.

In one incident, a 77-year-old Chicago woman was swindled out of $9,000 by a fraudster pretending to be a Federal Trade Commission agent. The funds were transferred to an overseas crypto wallet and were never recovered by the victim, according to the report.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), providing a national loss estimate for the first time, informed scamnews.info that crypto ATM scams led to over $120 million being stolen from the public in 2023. This number excludes risks associated with national security and money laundering.
