Scammers Use Dating Platforms To Defraud People

As online dating has become increasingly popular around the world, scammers are increasingly using the platform to prey on vulnerable people. Known as romance scams, these fraudulent schemes have seen a sharp increase, targeting people looking for companionship or love through dating apps and social media.

The scams typically begin with the scammer creating a fake profile, often using stolen photos and fabricated personal details to appear attractive and trustworthy. They spend weeks or even months building a relationship with their victims, gaining their trust and affection.

Once they feel their victims are emotionally invested, they begin to spin a story of financial hardship, often involving an emergency such as a medical bill or urgent travel need. In many cases, the scammer will ask for money to be sent via wire transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Victims, believing they are helping someone they care about, often comply, sometimes sending large sums of money. Unfortunately, once the funds are transferred, the scammer disappears, leaving the victim heartbroken and financially devastated.

Authorities are urging online matchmakers to be vigilant and to recognize the signs of romance scams. They advise never sending money to someone you have never met in person and to be skeptical of anyone who quickly expresses deep feelings or claims to have an emergency that requires financial assistance. As these scams continue to increase, vigilance is the best defense against falling victim.
